American in the Philippines by One of Them
Authored in 1937, this piece gives a good glimpse of American family life in the Philippine Capital. Reportedly, country population had reached twelve million of which about twenty thousand were Americans. Local entertainment? Go dancing at Manila Hotel, Santa Ana Cabaret, or dine at Tom’s Dixie Kitchen or Tom’s Oriental Grill. Bored with Manila? Take an inter-island steamer to the Visayas, Zamboanga or Jolo. Feeling the Asian “Wander Lust”? Fly a Pan America Clipper to Hongkong or pulsating Shanghai. – BB
